Drivers reminded to stay safe on Devon and Cornwall's roads this festive season
Police will be carrying out extra patrols to target drink and drug drivers
As we enter the holiday season, Devon and Cornwall Police is reminding drivers to stay safe on our roads and not to consume drink or drugs if you are driving.
Many people will be travelling across the two counties to visit loved ones or attend festive events, and the Force is asking everyone to think in advance about how they are getting home.
Roads Policing Team Sergeant Owen Messenger said: "If you are driving and consuming alcohol or drugs you are risking your own life as well as the lives of other innocent road users.
"Our message all year round is to not drive when under the influence, but this week in particular is likely to see more people considering taking a risk and getting behind the wheel in an unfit state."
"If you are driving, one is one too many."
A conviction for drink or drug driving is likely to see any driver given a ban of at least 12 months along with a substantial fine and an impact both at home and from many employers.
As part of Operation Limit, Devon and Cornwall officers will be patrolling road networks to act upon intelligence and take enforcement action against any driver taking a risk.
Sgt Messenger added: "Not only is the impact on the person who chooses to take the wrong option and drive when unfit. All too often, a family is bereaved and left to pick up the pieces as the result of the actions of a drink or drug driver.
"I would ask anyone attending a party or family gathering to think about how they are getting home in advance and consider nominating a designated driver or booking transport before travelling.
"Any driver should also remember that alcohol and drugs takes time to clear your system and you may still be impaired the morning after - if in doubt, do not get behind the wheel, there is no excuse for putting yourself and others at risk."
