New reopened A30 reducing travel times for Summer getaways
The multi-million-pound improvement scheme saw the dualling of an 8.7-mile section of single carriageway
Millions of people are seeing a smoother summer getaway this year with the reopening of the A30.
As part of the National Highways’ A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross upgrade, the official dual road reopened ahead of the school holidays.
The multi-million-pound improvement scheme, and critical road for the South West and Cornwall, saw the dualling of an 8.7-mile section of single carriageway, helping to promote economic growth, improve journey times and increase safety by unlocking one of the last major bottlenecks in the county on the Strategic Road Network.
Having opened in June, the new section of dual carriageway has already significantly reduced travel time in the region, cutting congestion in time for the summer holidays.
Neil Winter, National Highways, said: "Satnavs and Google Maps have caught up and it's now directing people to use the dual carriageway and not local roads. The improvement and the benefits that we've had, not just for the tourists coming down but for the locals who use the road, I think it'll demonstrate that it's needed."
The road scheme includes:
• a 70mph high-quality dual carriageway
• 10 new underpasses and underbridges
• 3 new bridges over the new road
• Refurbishment of an existing underpass that takes a local road under the new A30
• Over 3.5 million cubic metres of earthworks
• 33 new culverts and wildlife crossings
• Nearly 29 miles of new highway drainage
• Over 12 miles of wildlife proof fencing
• New badger setts and bat roosts
• 345,000 tonnes of tarmac
• 8 miles of Cornish hedge
