A woman has died and a man is critically ill after a car crash right in the centre of Bristol.

Four cars collided at the junction of St Michael's Hill and Upper Maudlin Street on Thursday afternoon (June 14), just around the corner from the BRI.

Both the woman, who was in her 80s and the man who's in his 90s were in a red Toyota coming down St Michael's Hill when the crash happened.

They collided with a blue Hyundai which was also coming down the hill and two other cars that were both turning right off Upper Maudlin Street, at around 2:30pm.

Two women and a teenage boy from the Hyundai went to hospital with injuries not believed to be either life-threatening or life-changing.

Those in the other cars did not need hospital treatment.

The family of the woman who's died and the man who's critically ill are being supported by specially trained police officers; Avon and Somerset Police say their thoughts are with them.

The road was closed for more than five hours while the scene was investigated and the cars recovered, leading to severe traffic around the centre.

A number of witnesses gave accounts to officers at the scene but police are still keen to hear from anyone with dashcam or other footage.

Anyone who can help is asked to call 101.
