A spa in Bath is set to reopen after an 18th century column was damaged on Wednesday (4/12).

In a statement, Thermae Bath Spa said a lorry reversed into the structure, which is one of six columns supporting part of the building.

The spa's structural engineers and experts have assessed the extent of the damage and quickly drew up a repair plan.

It says the specialist team worked throughout the night to fix the problem but the solution was complicated by the fact that the structure sits on top of 18th century vaults.

In the original statement Thermae Bath Spa said: "This morning at 7:30am a delivery lorry unexpectedly reversed into one of the 18th century columns, being one of the six columns supporting the colonnade to the entrance of Thermae Bath Spa."

"The safety of our customers and our staff is our first priority and therefore, regrettably, we have taken the decision to close whilst structural engineers and experts assess the damage to the column and advise when we can reopen.

"If you have a spa booking for today, please call our reservations team on 01225 33 1234 and they will be able to assist. As you can appreciate, our phone lines will be extremely busy today, please bear with us.

"Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused."
