An inquest is due to start this morning (15th April) looking into the death of a man in Bristol, who had severe learning difficulties, autism and down's syndrome.

Marcus Hanlin who was 57 died at the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) on 2nd October, 2022, after being taken ill at the care home where he lived.

A resident at Cheddar Grove Nursing Home, which specialises in looking after people with learning disabilities, Marcus fell ill after swallowing two conkers and dyed rice while unsupervised.

That happened despite him being subject to an eating and drinking support plan and a requirement for him to be supervised at all times.

"Marcus’s condition deteriorated and he died five days later," a statement from Inquest Lawyer Group reads, which is representing his family.

It was only discovered that Marcus had swallowed conkers after his death, with the inquest due to examine issues including the training of staff at the care home, the events of 28th September 2022 when Marcus was left unsupervised, the management at the BRI and what caused his death.

Marcus is described by his family as a real character, mischievous, curious and interested in and affectionate towards others.

Marcus’s family said “As a family we are still in shock at the loss of Marcus.

"The nature of how this came about, the pain and fear Marcus suffered and the loss of his life in this manner are beyond bearing.

"Marcus deserves for us to do all we can to ensure the truths of what happened are reached and we hope others can be saved the same suffering and resultant family heartache.”
