An inquest into the death of Stephen Cadman was heard at Avon Coroner's Court
A coroner has ruled that 37-year-old Stephen Cadman from Bristol died of a single stab wound in 2021, though was unable to determine how he got them.
An inquest into his death was held at Avon Coroner's Court on Wednesday (10th April).
Stephen Cadman was born in Truro but lived in Hartcliffe when he died from stab wounds to the chest on Bishport Avenue on the 16th September 2021.
Soon after his murder, police arrested a woman but charges were later dropped.
The case was dismissed after officers uncovered new evidence of a call made to paramedics, minutes after Stephen's death, suggesting he wasn't killed.
The court heard how Stephen suffered with mental health, substance abuse and self harm, suggesting it was possible he could have taken his own life.
A post mortem was carried out and a pathologist confirmed the death was a result of a single stab wound to his chest but it couldn't be said whether the wound was self inflicted or the result of a third party - either was possible.
The coroner, Dr Peter Harrowing, confirmed he would return an open conclusion and told the court:
"The deceased died following a stab wound to his chest - how he came to the wound has not been established.
"My sincerest condolences to the family."
At the time of his death, the family released a tribute in his memory.
They said: “Stephen was a good father and friend to many and would always put himself out of the way to help anybody.
“He will be greatly missed by all. Rest in peace Stephen with your loving sister Amy.”
