Bristol Sport have joined forces with the organisation Hubbub in the 'Bristol's Binning' campaign.

It's all in aid to help reduce litter on the streets of Bristol - a campaign that was launched back in November, with a giant wave sculpture helping to kickstart their efforts to share their message across the city.

In the campaign, partners Bristol City Council, Hubbub, and Bristol Waste launched Bristol's Binning with the rollout of eye-catching bins in what they say are hotspots for litter.

The bins are tricky to miss, thanks to bright colours, song lyrics and playful puns, all in aid to make people think twice about dropping their litter.

Alongside their engaging campaign - especially with the aim of getting more young people involved - Bristol Sport have launched a competition where you could win one of five pairs of tickets to a Bristol City of Bristol Bears game.

It's thanks to their involvement with 'LitterLotto' - an app where you take a picture of yourself binning litter or recycling.

All you need to do is take a photo of yourself disposing of your litter in areas around the Ashton Gate stadium, or across the city, and upload it to the app to be in with a chance of winning.

Any bin can be used - but the caveat is that household items won't count: that includes things like shampoo bottles or cartons of milk. What they're looking for is anything that would go on to be counted as litter, such as sandwiches, drinks cans, and crisp packets.

What does the picture have to look like? Well, Bristol Sport says you need to take a picture of you holding the litter - with your hands, gloves, or on a litter picker, above the bin you're about to drop the litter in. It's that simple!

Lisa Knights, Group Director of Communications of Bristol Sport, said: "There's many different aspects to the campaign, but it's mainly aimed at reducing litter on the streets of Bristol. As a stadium, we attract a lot of fans, and it's why the LitterLotto is perfect to help out.

"This whole campaign is part of our wider initiative of Bristol Sport, and comes after hearing a stat from Bristol City Council back in November, where they said over a third of 16 to 25-year-olds admit to dropping litter. And interestingly, men are two times more likely to litter than women. So, let's get out there and try to reverse that!"

The LitterLotto campaign runs for the rest of the sporting season.

Beau Zilesnick, Creative Partner at Hubbub said: “We’re pleased to see local business involvement boost the campaign, with more colourful bins and so many more prizes up for grabs for anyone binning their litter. Thanks to the support from local partners such as Bristol Sport, we can engage with residents and visitors to Bristol in a fun way in locations we know are litter hotspots. We’re keen to speak with other interested organisations how they can get involved in ‘Bristol’s Binning’ and help tackle the 3,700 tonnes of litter collected every year in Bristol.”

Peter Smith, Project Manager at Bristol Sport, said: “Waste is one of five key issues being tackled by Project Whitebeam so we’re delighted to be a part of the Bristol’s Binning campaign. As proud Bristolians we strongly encourage everyone to use bins properly at the stadium, en route to games and wherever you are in our great city."

Project Whitebeam

Bristol Sport’s participation in Bristol's Binning is all part of their 'Project Whitebeam' initiative.

It was launched earlier this year by Bristol Bears, Bristol City, Bristol Flyers, and Ashton Gate to recognise, measure and minimise our impact on the environment.

All the clubs and Ashton Gate signed up to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, which sets a target of reaching net zero by 2040 and meeting a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Project Whitebeam's current progress:

  • Over 50% of food and drink travels less than 12 miles to Ashton Gate Stadium
  • Stadium waste is zero to landfill
  • Surplus matchday food is donated to a women’s homeless shelter less than a mile away
  • Hosted a FareShare warehouse - diverting over 132 tonnes of food from landfill and saving 52 tonnes of carbon

Project Whitebeam was shortlisted at the BASIS (The British Associations for Sustainable Sport) Awards last year and Bristol City won the Climate Action Award at the 2022 Football Supporters’ Association Awards (FSA) for Project Whitebeam.

Lisa Knights added: "Project Whitebeam is our main focus and there's a number of key strands of the project. Waste is one of those, so Bristol's Binning naturally fits hand in hand with what we're trying to do.

"Ashton Gate sits in the heart of the community, and we've always looked to help with others. This is an opportunity for us to work with Bristol City Council and Hubbub to amplify their message about trying to tidy up our city.

"There's a long way to go with Whitebeam, but it's something that we're really committed to - and we've got a whole task force within the entire sporting group helping us on our journey. We're a large employer in the city, too, and the thing that I'm most pleased about so far with our progress is the number of employees who have got involved.

"I would be confident that we will meet our targets by 2030, but they're tough targets to meet. The targets are there, and we've got to rise to the challenge."
