Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees says he has formally applied to stand as a Labour candidate in next summer's General Election.

Rees, who is currently serving his second term as Mayor, has announced in a post online that he has applied to stand for Labour in the Bristol North East constituency, which is due to be contested next year for the first time in decades.

The constituency is being recreated as part of nationwide boundary changes this year and is likely to be a safe seat for Labour, who hold all the current Bristol seats.

It will cover the areas of Stapleton, where Rees is from, plus Lockleaze, Fishponds and Horfield among others.

"Today I've applied to be Labour parliamentary candidate for Bristol North East," he says.

"I was born in Bristol.

"It is where I've stayed and made a home with my family.

"I would be honoured to serve as your MP, delivering for my constituents and ensuring a Labour government at the next election."

Bristol's mayoral role, which Rees currently holds, will be scrapped next May after the city voted to return to a committee system of local government.
