Two men have been jailed for a combined 14 and a half years for an attempted robbery in Weymouth.

53 year old Richard David Grimshaw from Weymouth and 33 year old Shane Peter Smith from Portland were sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court yesterday (Monday 20th March).

Grimshaw was given a seven and a half year sentence, with Shaw handed a seven year jail term.

What happened?

The victim found a man had opened the front door at a property in Hereford Road in Weymouth at around 5.15pm on Sunday 14th August 2022.

The man, who was identified as Smith, demanded the victim to hand over his wallet.

Smith was asked to leave, but then assaulted the victim.

Grimshaw then entered the property, wearing a Halloween Scream mask, and also assaulted the victim.

A neighbour disturbed the attack, who came to the victim's defence, and was also punched in the face.

At the sentencing hearing, the man who intervened was commended by the judge for his bravery.

Detective Constable Kate Rhodes, of Dorset County CID, said:

“This was an extremely frightening incident for the two victims, and I would like to thank them for their support throughout the investigation, which I know has been very difficult for them.

“I would also like to extend my thanks to the officers who initially responded. They demonstrated excellent work under pressure that assisted in securing the safety of the victims and gaining justice for what was a horrific experience.

“I am delighted that following a detailed investigation we were able to bring the defendants before the court to face the consequences of their actions. The judge passed robust sentences that I hope will prevent others from partaking in criminality.”
