'I can think of nothing nicer than a trip to Weymouth'; Boris Johnson
Boris Johnson was invited to see the need for investment here by South Dorset MP Richard Drax.
A beach trip to Weymouth could be on the card for Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the near future.
The PM spoke on investment funding for Weymouth Train Station in the House of Commons earlier this week.
But, South Dorset MP Richard Drax told the Mr Johnson he really needed to see Weymouth to understand the investment needed. He said:
"As a former soldier, I know that time is never wasted on reconnaissance.
"May I ask my right hon. Friend to come and get some good Dorset sea air, visit Weymouth and see the infrastructure for himself?
"Until we improve it, we cannot attract the investment, jobs and prosperity that we so desperately need, in an ancient seaside resort that needs a bit of love, attention and Government money."
The Prime Minister responded:
"I can think of nothing nicer than a trip to Weymouth, which I think was the favourite watering hole of George III—or so I am told by the Lord Chancellor. I will do my utmost to oblige my hon. Friend."
The Prime Minister also revealed the local growth fund in Dorset has contributed £98.4 million to 54 different projects in the last 6 years.
The bid to improve Weymouth Train Station recently got the backing of Dorset Council cabinet following funding being secured. The project overall will cost £997, 096.
It's hoped the Weymouth Gateway project will rejuvenate the town by improving transport links and make a much more enticing offer to new businesses and tourists looking to come to the town.
