Discarded glass bottles may have caused Studland heath fire
It's another warning for people to take rubbish away with them
It's thought the sun reflecting on discarded glass bottles may have caused a large heath fire in Studland.
Crews were called out just before 11.00am on Wednesday morning (12th July) to tackle the fire.
The blaze, close to the ferry terminal caused a large amount of smoke in the area.
Strong winds fanned the fire, making it difficult to tackle, along with a lack of local water supplies.
An area of internationally important heathland - around the size of a football pitch - has been destroyed.
Crews put the flames out within a few hours, but remained on the scene throughout Wednesday night to dampen down any hotspots.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue say the rubbish left on the heathland could have been behind the blaze starting.
Firefighters have reminded us many times to take out waste with us following visits to our countryside, and to 'leave only footprints'.
