West Midlands Ambulance Service have issued guidance on driving home for Christmas safely.

Over 40% of drivers in the West Midlands do not feel confident driving during the winter months.

Meanwhile, 22.7 million of us have been predicted to be on the roads today (23rd Dec), according to the AA.

Laura Horobin is a paramedic with West Midlands Ambulance Service.

She told us what some of the risks are at this time of year: "Icy conditions, wet conditions and the possibility of snow."

She said that flood water can be just as bad for casualties:

"With flood water, one car might be able to get through. Then another thinks they will be able to, but that is not always the case," she said.

The Ambulance Service is urging us to be cautious, in order for our journeys to be safe.

They said that this is their busiest time of year. With a high volume of calls from September until January.

Dave Harford, from Worcester, is a specialist in road safety for the emergency services.

He advised that drivers check their tyres, headlights, oil and water before long journeys.

He also said it is important to make sure you prepare the inside of your car too:

"In case of an emergency, you should have these items in your car: a coat, a shovel, a fully charged phone, money and medication in case of any delays," he said.

Figures suggested that 1 in 5 West Midlands drivers would not feel confident describing their location to a 999 operator if they had a break down.

That number was even higher when it came to breaking down on country lanes.

Dave Harford recommended the 'What 3 Words' app.

"People do not know where they are. If they download the app, that can pinpoint their location exactly.

"It will avoid delays of getting help to them. Whether that be a break down or a medical emergency," he said.
