Olly Alexander opens up about the importance of LGBT+ History Month

"It's helped me understand myself"

Published 21st Jan 2022

Years & Years has had an incredible start to 2022, from bringing in the New Year with none other than Kylie Minogue to releasing his brand new album 'Night Call', the singer has been busy! Olly Alexander will also be joining in the the celebrations of LGBT+ History Month and got chatting about what this time of remembrance means to him.

Observed throughout February in the UK every year, LGBT+ History Month is a time to learn about and celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history as well as promote equality and diversity. The theme for this years celebration will be Politics In Art.

Olly opened up about the importance of learning about LGBT+ history: "I think as a gay person growing up you can feel really disconnected to your past, your history, or it can just be really confusing to know who to reach out to. You might not have those family members for instance that might be able to give you a helping hand."

The 'Sooner Or Later' singer also revealed how important the LGBT+ community has been for him: "Seeking out your community is super important, and then knowing how your community was formed, where it came from, how it affects other communities, that’s just really helpful information. For me anyway it’s always been so helpful and helped me understand myself."
