For thousands of people across the North East, today is the sixth day with no power after power lines across the county were destroyed by Storm Arwen.

Many homes in the region will have endured a night of minus temperatures with no electricity as the Northern PowerGrid continue their to work to repair power lines which were destroyed by winds upwards of 90 miles per hour.

Despite their continuing repairs, 11,000 people are still being affected across Northern Powergrid's network.

However, the past six day have only brought some communities closer together, with many using community centres to provide warmth and shelter for families who are still without power.

Glenda Horn, who runs the Lanchester Community Centre in County Durham, tell us some residents in the village have been without power for over 6 days so they’ve opened their doors to support the public.

Glenda said: "Lanchester is a really caring community anyway, and we have been approached by one of our local councillors to ask if our community centre could be a safe warm refuge, so we have of course said yes.

"Between 9 and 6, and we ae doing this for the rest of the week as well, we were happy for people to come here, to get warm and have something to eat.

"We really feel that the community centre here that this is for the people of Lanchester. It's not privately owned, we are a charity and we are self funded, and we are here to serve the people of Lanchester and the surrounding areas."
