Police investigating a suspected attack on two adults and a child at a school in Sheffield have said one of the adults was hurt with what's thought to be "broken glass".

Officers have confirmed a 17-year-old boy was arrested on the school grounds and is being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.

Two women in their 20s were checked over by paramedics following the incident, while police said a child assaulted "thankfully has no visible injuries."

In a statement given outside the school, Assistant Chief Constable Dan Thorpe praised the staff for their actions following the "frightening ordeal", saying they "helped keep the school community safe".

Mr Thorpe said the incident "will no doubt cause ongoing concern" and that officers would continue to patrol the area and be available for the community.

School head Victoria Hall said: "I just wanted to thank all of our students and staff who helped manage the situation this morning, and our staff who prioritised the safety and wellbeing of all of our students."

Mrs Hall also praised the students' "exemplary behaviour", saying the school will be open on Thursday morning as usual.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak addressed the incident during PMQs on Wednesday, saying his thoughts were with those affected.

His comments were echoed by the Labour leader, while Education Secretary Gillian Keegan posted on X saying she was "disturbed" by the news.

She added: "We're in touch with the school and my thoughts are with those injured and all the school community affected by this frightening situation."
