A man armed with a knife in the car park of a police station in Derby has been shot dead by officers.

Armed police were sent to Ascot Drive just after 10 o'clock this morning (7th OCT).

In a press conference this evening, Deputy Chief Constable Kate Meynell said the window of the police station was smashed during the incident:

"At 9:55am today, October 7, officers reported seeing a man armed with a knife in the secure car park of Ascot Drive police station, off Ascot Drive.

"During the incident, the window was smashed at the police station.

"Armed officers were sent to the scene and a police firearm was then discharged."

She said the force are now working to identify the man and his next of kin.

"The male's identity is currently unknown, but I can confirm he's a white man and we're working to establish who he is," she said.

Police officers administered first aid until paramedics arrived, and the man was then taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

DCC Meynell added that the force is not currently treating the incident as terror related.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been informed.

No officers, staff or other members of the public were injured during the incident.

A cordon will remain in place for some time, whilst enquiries are ongoing.

We've spoken with an eyewitness who was shopping at B&M bargains next to the scene. She tells us:

"We heard about six bangs. At first it just sounded like beer kegs falling off the back of a lorry.

"Then B&M staff went outside and said armed police are everywhere, so everybody started to get a bit concerned about what's happening.

"And then over the tannoy, staff were shouting that we needed to evacuate immediately.

"I'd got my daughter in the trolley, we had to evacuate and leave everything, and we came out to find around ten police cars at a scene and it all taped off.

"It was rather scary knowing that it happened five minutes after I entered the store.

"If we'd have been any later getting in there, it could have been possible that we'd have witnessed that and it's not something anybody wants to see."

In a statement, the police watchdog has confirmed a knife has been recovered from the scene.

IOPC regional director Derrick Campbell said: “Our thoughts are with all of those affected by this tragic incident. It is vital there is an independent investigation into all of the circumstances that resulted in this man’s death. I would like to reassure people that we will conduct a thorough and detailed investigation into what took place. Our enquiries are in their very early stages.”
