Major response triggered following incident on vessel at Liverpool Port
Emergency services have been called to scene to investigate
A major response is underway at the Port of Liverpool following an incident on board a vessel that left a man trapped between two containers.
Emergency services arrived to the scene at around midday on Saturday amid reports of an incident at the Seafort Container Base at the city's port.
Firefighters, police officers and ambulances were seen rushing to the Port to offer first aid to a person who was trapped by the legs between two containers.
A statement from Merseyside Fire and Rescue confirmed that a person was caught between the two containers, but added that the person was "conscious and breathing".
The initial report from the Service read: "Fire crews are in attendance at an incident at Seaforth Container Base, Port of Liverpool this afternoon.
"Two fire engines and the Search and Rescue Team are in attendance. Crews were alerted at 12.00pm and on scene at 12.06pm. Crews arrived to find a person trapped by the legs between two containers, with the casualty conscious and breathing.
"After a meeting between Fire Service, North West Ambulance, Port Police and Port Staff, a plan was agreed to remove the casualty using hydraulic equipment and airbags. The casualty was successfully released and is now in the care of North West Ambulance Service and receiving medical treatment."
Similarly, Peel Ports, the company that operates the port itself confirmed the incident was ongoing with the emergency services still in attendance.
In a statement provided by the company, they said: "We are aware of an incident onboard a vessel currently berthed at the Port of Liverpool, details are yet unknown. We are working with the emergency services and our priority at this time is ensuring crew safety. We will provide an update when appropriate to do so.”
Air ambulance helicopters could be seen hovering over the port as the incident is taking place, but no information has been given on the current condition of the person.
