A joint investigation is being launched by Police and the Fire Service in Merseyside after a huge blaze ripped through a building on the outskirks of the city centre.

Fire crews were called to the scene yesterday afternoon just before 2:30pm, when they arrived it was already "well alight".

A cordon's still in place with emergency services unable to commence an investigation yesterday because of the conditions of the building but are hoping to make progress today in daylight.

The fire took hold quickly at the four storey building which can be seen abanonded in images on Google Maps from 2023 with missing windows and a sheeting material in places.

Overnight crews have been working to ensure the building is safe for investigators to begin their job.

In their latest update the fire service say "Firefighters have been using main jet and high pressure hose reels throughout the night, with relief crews checking for hot spots with the aid of lighting rigs.

"Late last night the incident was scaled back to one fire engine. One fire engine has remained, with firefighters hotspotting and using Thermal Imaging Cameras to check the area and damp down as necessary.

"There are now no visible hot spots or smoke in the area. Merseyside Police are still maintaining an outer cordon."
