A cordon is still in place after a huge fire in Liverpool.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue declared a major incident yesterday afternoon - although that's now been scaled down, with just one fire engine still at the scene on Fox Street.

Investigators are hoping to establish the cause of the blaze at the four-storey building.

Huge plumes of smoke were seen across the city - nearby residents had to be evacuated.

The fire service has issued the following update:

"Firefighters have been using main jet and high pressure hose reels throughout the night, with relief crews checking for hot spots with the aid of lighting rigs."

"Late last night the incident was scaled back to one fire engine.

"One fire engine has remained, with firefighters hotspotting and using Thermal Imaging Cameras to check the area and damp down as necessary.

"There are now no visible hot spots or smoke in the area. Merseyside Police are still maintaining an outer cordon."
