Homes evacuated as firefighters tackle blaze in Cheshire

Firefighters have worked through the night to bring a blaze at a disused former printers in Cheshire under control.

At around 4.15pm on Friday (9 August), emergency services were called to the building on Catherine Street.

At its height, 15 fire crews were working to dampen the flames and prevent the fire spreading to nearby buildings.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said a number of gardens of surrounding properties have been affected by the fire, and some homes were evacuated.

An electrical substation near to the disused building was also affected, so electricity to some properties was disconnected.

As of midnight, the fire service said 10 fire engines remained at the scene, and residents from Ernest Street and Bedford Street were allowed to return to their homes.

Other residents unable to return to their homes are being looked after at Crewe Lifestyle Centre, which is being used as a rest centre.
