An iconic landmark on Merseyside of over 50 years has been reduced to rubble.

The four northern cooling towers at the former Fiddlers Ferry Power station - which was decommissioned 3 years ago - have been demolished.

It's been raised to the ground to make way for a major redevelopment project.

WATCH: The moment the towers collapsed was streamed online, you can see the demolition at about 48 minutes:

People online reported hearing the explosion from miles away, with some saying they felt their windows and doors shake.

It was disappointment for some though who gathered to watch the towers collapse, with heavy fog obscuring the view for many.

The area is set to be transformed into a new neighbourhood over the next decade.
