Manchester United and Scottish football legend Denis Law has had his very own statue unveiled in his home city of Aberdeen.

Former Dons boss Sir Alex Ferguson was among those special guests who'll hail the football legend at a private ceremony.

After the statue was unveiled, Denis said: "Thank you to the Aberdeen Town Council and the Denis Law legacy trust for this unbelievable honour. Thank you."

The bronze figure will take pride of place outside Provost Skene's house as a permanent momento of one of Scottish football's all-time greats.

Law scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for Manchester United and was named The Lawman and The King by their supporters.

Denis played for Huddersfield Town, Manchester City, Torino and Manchester United and became the greatest footballer that Scotland has ever produced.

He is only Scottish Ballon D'Or winner, when he won the award in 1964, after scoring 46 goals in all competitions.

"A brilliant tribute to a very proud Aberdonian"

Denis Law Legacy Trust chief Mark Williams says that this statue cements the footballer amongst the greats.

"We're incredibly proud to have an Aberdonian up there with the likes of Messi and Ronaldo who have numerous statues all over the world, but for Denis it's much more than that. For him and his family its a real nod to the city of Aberdeen", he said.

"This statue is a brilliant tribute to a very proud Aberdonian. Denis has achieved so much in his life, and to be recognised in this way is an absolute true honour for him. It's a big day for everyone involved, the charity, Denis and his family of course as well.

"The statue will be in place here for years to come, so so many people can come and see him, see what he was all about, learn about his career and hopefully be inspired to give everything your all because you never know where it might lead you. That's a really important message for young people visiting the statue today."

The private ceremony comes 4 years after he was awarded freedom of the city.
