The #ClapForCarers campaign, set up by Dutch lady Annemarie Plas back in March, has become a staple part of our lives during lockdown, with millions of people standing outside their houses at 8pm on Thursday night to thank all of the key workers during the Coronavirus pandemic.

And as tonight's clap (Thursday 28th May) marks the campaign's 10th week, creator Annemarie has explained why she thinks it should come to an end.

Speaking to PA, Annemarie said, “I think it’s good to have the last of the series on Thursday, because to have the most impact I think it is good to stop it at its peak.

“Without getting too political, I share some of the opinions that some people have about it becoming politicised. I think the narrative is starting to change and I don’t want the clap to be negative.”

Annemarie's comments have certainly caused some divided opinions. Whilst many agree with her and think the gesture has turned into a 'competition', others think the weekly clap should continue to show appreciation for NHS staff and key workers throughout the pandemic.

After getting the #ClapForCarers idea from a Dutch WhatsApp Group she is in, Annemarie launched a bid for the UK to take part in the campaign, which was received greatly by the public when the first ever clap took place on 26th March.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson takes part in the clap every Thursday night, as well as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

So, wherever you are tonight, get out your pots, pans, wooden spoons or simply your hands, and take part in the final ever #ClapForCarers at 8pm on Thursday 28th May.

Stay safe. ❤️
