Man seriously injured after 'boulder' dropped from flyover bridge near Rainworth

Police condemn 'mindless and abhorrent' act

A man has suffered a serious head injury after reports a boulder was dropped from a flyover bridge in Nottinghamshire.

Police have launched an investigation after a vehicle was apparently hit below on the A617 near Rainworth.

It is believed the boulder was dropped near Hemsley Road at around 10pm last night.

The victim was driving a silver Transit van in the direction of Mansfield .

A road closure is in place on the A617 between the roundabout at Kirklington Road and the roundabout with the A6191.

Superintendent Heather Maelor from Nottinghamshire Police said:

“We are taking this mindless and abhorrent act extremely seriously.

“We know there were a high number of vehicles in the area at the time, so please review your dash cam footage to help our investigation and find the person responsible.

“We are looking for footage from the scene of this incident or from any witnesses at around 10pm.”

Police officers remain at the scene.

It is understood the road could be opened early this afternoon.
