Three men have been jailed for over 40 years for the attempted murder of a man in Basildon three years ago.

Jay Silver and Jordan Yakulu were sentenced to respective prison terms of 21 and 19 years for their roles in the attack, which took place in February 2021.

A third man, 19-year-old Trenton Best from Ayletts in Basildon, was jailed for four years on charged of grievous bodily harm with intent.

A man in his 30s had been walking along Wimbesh End in Basildon towards the Chalvedon shopping complex at 3:50pm when he spotted a group of men he had known.

The group had had issues with the man in the lead-up to the attack and so, to avoid running into the men, the victim tried to get away from the scene.

However, the men had spotted him and as a result gave chase to the man on Mill Green, towards the Ashlyns area of the town.

He was eventually caught by the group and attacked, being stabbed by one member of the group with a knife under his armpit - first with a Rambo knife and then by a jagged knife.

Following this, the rest of the group joined in on the assault, beating him before walking off and leaving him on the ground with serious injuries.

After being taken to hospital, it was discovered he had been stabbed eight times by the group on various parts of his body, with the injuries being described as "life-threatening".

An investigation was set up Essex Police to track down the men responsible for the attack, with the Basildon Crime Incident Department leading the way.

Following an intense line of enquiries, the work the force put in led to the arrest and charge of the three men, who were sentenced at Basildon Crown Court on Thursday (February 29th).

Speaking on the case, Detective Inspector Stewart Eastbrook from the local department, said that the incident was serious and was grateful to the force for the work they did.

"This was brutal and sustained attack which left a man fighting for his life," he said. "Jay Silver and Jordan Yakulu attacked him with such ferocity that he could easily have died.

ā€œAlong with Trenton Best, they pose a very real danger to the public and I am pleased they will be spending the foreseeable future behind bars thanks to our work, in particular DC Bryony Harrison.

ā€œTackling violent crime is a priority for Essex Police and we are seeing the work weā€™re doing in this area pay off."

Essex Police have cracked down on knife crime across the county, with 150 fewer crimes taking place in recent months, a drop of nine percent compare to previous figures.

"The work weā€™re doing is making the county safer and bringing violent criminals like Silver, Yakulu, and Best to justice is part of that."
