Statue of Sir Alex Ferguson unveiled in Aberdeen

Fans and former players gathered at Pittodrie for the ceremony

A statue honouring former Aberdeen and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been unveiled at Pittodrie.

Thousands of fans gathered at the stadium, along with Sir Alex and the Dons squad that won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1983.

As well as the famous win against Real Madrid, Sir Alex led Aberdeen to three titles, four Scottish Cups, and the European Super Cup during his tenure as manager.

Speeches from members of the 'Gothenburg Greats' were delivered in front of the Richard Donald Stand, with Fergie also taking to the stage.

The 80-year-old tribute to the players and staff which helped him achieve greatness with the Dons.

Aberdeen's Commercial Director Rob Wicks said the statue will be a great attraction for tourists.

He said: "It’s been a fair few months of planning and preparation to get to this point, but to be there now and see the standing ovation time after time from the fans is very moving.

"I was lucky enough to spend a full afternoon with him and the sculptor in the early part of the process.

"You really feel like you’re in the presence of greatness.

"He has an incredible memory, a remarkable sense of humour and an attention to detail we heard about in some of the speeches.

Sir Alex statue will bring in people "from far and wide"

"This’ll be a fantastic draw for tourists.

"Sir Alex is a name renowned not only in Aberdeen and Manchester, but he is also a world figure in football, this will bring people from far and wide."
