Nicola Walker hints at more specials of The Split

As well as news earlier this year that popular BBC drama The Split would be getting a spin-off show, bosses later delighted fans by revealing the hit drama was set to return for a two-part special, featuring most of the original cast!

Set two years on from series three, production for the two-part special started in May, with the likes of Nicola Walker, Stephen Mangan, Fiona Button, Annabel Scholey and Deborah Findlay all returning. The two-part special aired over two nights in December 2024, and now actress Nicola has hinted there could be more in the future.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Nicola, who plays Hannah Defoe in the series, said: "I think what we’re going to do is specials every year, as a cast that is what we’d all like to do but that’s just actors talking.

"We all love working together and it was gorgeous that it was a wedding that was going to be in Barcelona, that was gorgeous, too. But honestly they could have said we’re staying in a dark studio somewhere in a very cold part of England and we’d have still been very pleased."

Going on to speak about the potential of any more series, she added: "Listen, I never say never because I love those characters and I love those actors and it’s always a joy to go back to them. I think it has been great having that break away, but I love them so who knows maybe I’ll come back to them again someday,

"But right now it was just nice to take them away on an exotic, fun break from the office and the world of the series of The Split and give people a real treat for Christmas."

What is the special about?

The special is called The Split Barcelona, created and written by multi-award winning Abi Morgan.

BBC bosses say of the two part special: 'Two years on, formidable family lawyer Hannah Defoe (Nicola Walker) and her family are back and have gathered for a beautiful wedding at a magnificent vineyard, nestled in Catalonia’s wine region.

'Set across one sun soaked weekend, The Split will encompass break-ups, reunions and like all good weddings, plenty of romance. As the sun rises over the glorious Spanish countryside, Hannah is compelled to banish the ghosts of her past and open herself up to the possibility of love again. Can she find the courage to take the leap into a new future?'

Creator Abi Morgan said: “In a world of brutal break ups and tantalising make ups, the Defoe family are invited to a destination wedding of their own, promising all that audiences have grown to love about The Split. Problematic prenups, scandalous wedding crashers, and low flying marriage proposals, as rom com meets gone wrong, in a chaotic and riotous weekend that guarantees to crack open the heart, before the last of the guests have gone home.”

Is there a trailer?

BBC bosses released the trailer on Monday 9th December, alongside the caption: 'Love, legacy, and modern marriage. Can Hannah find the courage to take the leap into a new future?'.

How can I watch it?

The Split Barcelona aired on Sunday 29th December and Monday 30th December.

Both episodes are available on BBC iPlayer now.

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama said: “We know The Split’s millions of fans found it hard to break up with the Defoes, so before we delve into the heady world of The Split Up we couldn’t resist an extra treat in the form of these exquisite, sun-drenched specials from the wonderful Abi Morgan.”

Who is in the cast?

Fans will be pleased to know a number of The Split cast returned for the Spanish extravaganza, including Nicola Walker, Stephen Mangan, Annabel Scholey, Fiona Button, Deborah Findlay, Ian McElhinney, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Elizabeth Roberts and Alex Guersman.

Viewers were also introduced to brand new character Archie Moore in the two-part special, played by Percy Jackson actor Toby Stephens.

What is The Split spin-off show?

It was announced earlier this year that The Split would be getting a spin-off series called The Split Up, a six-part show which features the high-stakes world of Manchester’s divorce law circuit, where one family of lawyers, the Kishans, reigns supreme.

The Split Up will feature both a new city and a new family from The Split, and it's understood none of the original cast will feature in the new drama.

Speaking about The Split Up, Abi Morgan said: “After the success of The Split, it’s been great to see The Split Up take shape in lead writer Ursula Rani Sarma’s capable hands, reinvigorating all that audiences love. A new legal family, grabbing at life in a new city, battling new legal cases, as the professional and personal deliciously collide. A brilliant new cast of characters caught in the messiness of love, marriage, deception and divorce, make it their own. It is ripe to be taken into the hearts of anyone who loved the show.”

Despite the initial news, it's now being reported filming for The Split Up has been 'paused indefinitely' due to editorial reasons.

The Night Agent

After series one was Netflix's most-watched show of 2023, bosses were quick to commission The Night Agent for a second series! Netflix have now announced series two will land on Thursday 23rd January 2025. The show has also now been renewed for a third series.

Gladiators

Following the hugely successful first series, BBC bosses were quick to announce Gladiators had been commissioned for a second series! Although there's no official start date, filming took place in August, which also included a celebrity special!

Dancing On Ice

Stephen Mulhern and Holly Willoughby are set to return in early 2025 for a brand new series of Dancing On Ice, with a whole new bunch of celebs signing up to take part in the show.

The Apprentice

Lord Sugar is back at the end of January for series 19 of The Apprentice! 18 new candidates will be trying to impress Lord Sugar and his aides Baroness Karen Brady and Tim Campbell MBE. The new series begins on Thursday 30th January.

The Kardashians

The sixth series of The Kardashians will be available to stream on Disney+ from Thursday 6th February. Kris, Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Kylie and Kendall will return for more drama.

Stranger Things

Netflix bosses confirmed in January 2023 that the fifth and final series of Stranger Things had officially started production! Despite this, there's still no word yet on a release date.

Celebrity Big Brother

Following the first rebooted series in 2024, which welcomed celebs such as Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne and David Potts, it was confirmed that Celebrity Big Brother will be returning for another season in 2025!

Hijack

Following series one back in June 2023, Apple TV bosses have now confirmed Idris Elba will return for a second series of Hijack! No plot or start date has been announced just yet, but reports are rife that production will begin soon.

Unforgotten

Following the tense ending to series five in April 2023, ITV/STV bosses were quick to reveal drama series Unforgotten had been commissioned for a sixth series. Filming started in March 2024, so we imagine the new episodes could land later in the year.

Black Mirror

In March 2024, Netflix bosses revealed a seventh series of Black Mirror will land in 2025, with one of the episodes set to be a sequel to series four episode USS Callister. No official date has been announced just yet.

The Bay

ITV/STV drama The Bay was immediately renewed for a fifth series, following the fourth in 2023. Marsha Thomason is set to reprise her role as DS Jenn Townsend. Although there's no start date just yet, filming wrapped in July 2024.

Race Across The World

Series four of Race Across The World was one of the BBC's most popular shows of the year, and they were quick to renew the show for a fifth series. With applications closing in May this year, we suspect the show will air around Spring 2025.

Clarkson's Farm

Following three amazing series, Prime Video confirmed a fourth series was in the works in 2024, with it due to land in 2025. As if that wasn't enough, Jeremy has now confirmed series five is in production!

Love Is Blind: UK

Following the successful first series of Love Is Blind: UK, with hosts Matt and Emma Willis, Netflix have now confirmed the series has been renewed for a second instalment! Applications are open now, with series two set to air in 2025.

Red Eye

ITV/STV crime drama Red Eye become one of the station's biggest shows in 2024, so it's no surprise it was commissioned for a second series. Filming is due to begin in 2025, but there's no word on any release date just yet.

Mrs Brown's Boys

The popular controversial comedy Mrs Brown's Boys is returning for a fifth season! The show made its almighty return to screens in 2023, with fans delighted at the news that not only do we have some festive specials on the way - but a brand new mini series coming our way - with filming set to begin in 2025.

Emily In Paris

That's right, after things got pretty interesting for Emily Cooper as we saw her set up camp in Rome, starring actress Lily Collins answered our prayers as she confirmed that a fifth season is officially on the way - with fans taking it upon themselves to dub the season 'Emily In Rome'.

Trigger Point

Following two successful series, ITV/STV bosses announced in October 2024 that they'd commissioned Trigger Point for a third series, with production set to begin in London in 2025. Vicky McClure will reprise her role as bomb disposal operative Lana Washington, with series three expected to air sometime in early 2026.

Nobody Wants This

It was one of the most popular rom-coms of 2024, so it's no surprise Netflix bosses were quick to renew Nobody Wants This, starring Adam Brody and Kristen Bell. Although there's no exact release date for series two just yet, we suspect it will be sometime in 2025.

The Day of the Jackal

Series one of thriller The Day of the Jackal has broken viewing records for Sky Atlantic, so there's no surprise that bosses were quick to renew the show for a second series, before the first was even over! Although there's no air date just yet, filming is expected to take place in 2025.

Squid Game

Although series two of Squid Game only dropped on Boxing Day, the good news is that series three has already been filmed, and it's due out in 2025! There's no start date just yet, but creator Dong-Hyuk has teased it could be out in the Summer.
