Richard Madeley opens up about hospital dash and exit from I’m A Celebrity

He was forced to withdraw from the show

I’m A Celebrity campmate Richard Madeley has revealed the reasons why he was rushed to hospital in the middle of the night which unfortunately caused his departure from the show.

Last week, the Good Morning Britain presenter released a statement revealing that he had been forced to quit this year's show due to breaking his 'Covid bubble'.

Opening up about what caused his hospital dash on Monday’s (29th November) Good Morning Britain, he said: “I think I got dehydrated. It was actually quite disturbing.

“I'd been up for 20 hours, I don't think I got to bed until 4, 4.30 in the morning. I'm quite bad at remembering to drink anyway.

“As I snuggled in for the night, I thought I haven't had a drink, I'll have a big drink in the morning, I woke up babbling, I didn't know where I was, I couldn't string a sentence together.”

Richard also admitted that he didn’t realise the trip to hospital could perhaps mean the end of his time in camp.

He added: “I got a clean bill of health. But that's COVID precautions isn't it? If it wasn't for COVID I'd have been out for 2 hours and I would've been back by half 10 in the morning.

“I wanted to go back but there was no way I could risk going back in. It just wasn't an option, they are so strict about it. If I had the bug and went back to camp and it spread, it would have killed the series.

“We're all sleeping in the same dormitories, if anyone has the bug it's gonna spread.

“ITV has a proper duty of care. If you have someone in that castle talking nonsense, they have to check it out.”

He also denied rumours that the trial he did on Wednesday, where he had to dig around in freezing tunnels, made him ill, admitting: “I did that trial 36 hours before I fell ill. I do feel the trial was un-doable but it was not to do with why I fell ill.”

I’m A Celebrity is currently off-air after bosses were forced to cancel Friday's show and the weekend live shows following chaos on set caused by Storm Arwen.

On Saturday, it was revealed that all the celebrity campmates had been removed from the castle for safety precautions and are now isolating so they can go back in.

The campmates will now return to the same quarantine conditions before they arrived at the castle for the ITV reality show.
