Following the end of series 11 back in February, it looks like fans of BBC drama Call The Midwife won't have to wait too long for the next instalment, as filming has officially started!

The official Instagram account for the show made the exciting announcement, sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from filming, whilst revealing the brand new series will return in 2023, as well as Christmas special this December!

The post read: 'BREAKING NEWS!! Call the Midwife begins filming for Series 12!👶🚲 ❤️❤️❤️

'WE’RE BACK!!!

'This year Jenny Agutter (Sr Julienne) and Linda Bassett (Nurse Crane) were there to provide us with the traditional clapperboard shot that marks the beginning of the first scene of the new season 🙂

Bosses also confirmed that actress Helen George, who plays Nurse Trixie Franklin, is also set to return more prominently for series 12, after the 39-year-old was absent for most of the last series on maternity leave.

Sharing a photo of Helen, bosses wrote: 'Trixie's back!! Helen George makes her return to Call the Midwife Series 12 filming ❤️❤️❤️

'Our first week of filming the brand new Series 12 involves both day and night shooting - and guess who made a welcome return to Nonnatus house last night for her first scene ...

'Trixie! Played of course by our lovely Helen George xxx

'While Helen has been away she's had a little 'midwife calling' of her own to do, as she is now the proud mother of two! Her gorgeous new daughter, Lark, was born late last year, and Helen is now ready to get back into the saddle of her bicycle to minister to the women of Poplar once more!

'We are thrilled to have her back, and just can't wait to show you the next developments in Trixie's journey...' (sic)
