Songs from artists including Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Ariana Grande have been removed from TikTok after Universal Music Group stopped licensing their music.

All videos containing songs from artists from the label have now been muted, with the app's users being informed that the sound has been removed due to copyright restrictions.

Universal had previously said that its agreement with TikTok had not been renewed, and that the label would subsequently remove all of its songs when the current deal ended on Wednesday (31st January).

Why did Universal Music Group remove its artists' songs from TikTok

Universal Music Group released an open letter on Tuesday (20th January), in which it said: "TikTok's tactics are obvious: use its platform power to hurt vulnerable artists and try to intimidate us into conceding to a bad deal that undervalues music and shortchanges artists and songwriters as well as their fans."

Responding to the claims, TikTok shared the following statement with USA Today: "It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed about the interests of their artists and songwriters.

"Despite Universal's false narrative and rhetoric, the fact is they have chosen to walk away from the powerful support of a platform with well over a billion users that serves as as free promotional and discovery vehicle for their talent."

Meanwhile, Noah Kahan, whose track Number 1 track 'Stick Season' went viral on TikTok, shared a video to his page explaining that he could no longer promote his new music on the platform.

He said: "I can't stick it down your throats any more on this app. I'll probably be okay, right? I'll land on my feet, right?"
