Sheffield Wednesday players donate match salary to hospital fund
The Owls are raising money for a bedroom at Sheffield Children's Hospital
For the first time, every first team Sheffield Wednesday player will give up 90 minutes of their salary - to fund a special ‘Owls bedroom’ at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
It’s part of the hospital’s ‘Make it Better’ campaign which to match world class facilities with the existing world class care.
Wednesday host Cardiff City in the Championship on Good Friday and the Owls are dedicating the whole match to the campaign, which needs to raise £10m regionally to complement NHS funding of over £20m.
Fans will also be invited to get involved, with all money going towards the Sheffield Wednesday Bedroom. The hospital's currently working to change busy wards into single patient rooms.
The colourful bedrooms will have enough space for parents to sleep there while their children recover from surgery.
They will also be fitted with better facilities including more floor space, en-suite bathrooms, integrated parent beds, more storage for longer term visitors and special glazing to cancel out noise.
“This is a single patient room which will be used by children that come from all over the country,” says David Vernon-Edwards, director of the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.
“Every one of the special rooms has the name of who raised the money for it inside it. So this room will say that it’s been supported by Sheffield Wednesday.
“Hopefully if the players and fans all get behind it, it will raise £25,000 on the day. That will fund a brand new bedroom on the new wing of the hospital which is currently being built.”
