There's huge disruption on the train network across the North today after a freight train derailed at Sheffield Station overnight.

It happened at around 2.45am this morning and has caused significant damage to signalling. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

No trains in or out of the station were running earlier. Some platforms have since been cleared but only five of the station's eight are now open.

It means there are a lot of cancellations and delays today.

Inspectors from the Rail Accident Investigation Bureau will have to examine the scene before the train can be removed.

Network Rail say teams are working hard to get the services back up and running but we're being advised to check before we travel.

This incident is affecting CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Northern and TransPennine Express passengers.

Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail’s North and East Route, said:

“We’re really sorry about the huge amount of disruption that will be caused to passengers today.

“Thankfully, train derailments are very rare, but when they do happen we have to act with utmost caution to protect the safety of everyone using the railway.

“We will have our people working around the clock to get the station fully reopened as quickly as possible, but it’s going to be a complex problem that won’t be resolved immediately.”

Northern say customers on their trains can use their tickets on the Supertram between Sheffield and Meadowhall / Parkgate as well as on any reasonable alternative route.

Disruption is expected until the end of today.
