EFL fixtures released: the key games for South Yorkshire
Several of our local sides are looking to bounce back from relegation

The 2021-22 English Football League fixtures have been released, with several South Yorkshire teams starting the new season attempting to recover from relegation.
Here's the rundown for each of our local sides:
Sheffield United (Championship)
Having dropped out of the Premier League, Sheffield United start their Championship tenure under new boss Slavisa Jokanovic with a home fixture.
They face Birmingham City on August 7th.
The festive period sees Blades on the road to Preston North End on Boxing Day, before welcoming Neil Warnock's Middlesbrough on New Year's Day.
The final game of the campaign sees Fulham provide the opposition at Bramall Lane, on Saturday 7th May.
Barnsley FC (Championship)
Barnsley kick off the new Championship campaign where they finished the last one, with a trip to Mick McCarthy's Cardiff City on August 7.
The opening home game of the season will be against Coventry City on August 14.
Sheffield United come to Oakwell on October 23 for the first of two South Yorkshire Championship derbies in the regular season.
Boxing Day will be at home, with Stoke City providing the opposition. The Reds will bring in 2022 on the road at Nottingham Forest.
The campaign will finished on the road at recently relegated West Brom on May 7.
Sheffield Wednesday (League One)
Wednesday start life in League One away to Charlton on the opening day of the season. South Yorkshire rivals Doncaster visit Hillsborough for the opening home game of the new campaign.
The Owls welcome Burton Albion on Boxing Day.
The final game of 2021 will see Wednesday face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Wednesday finish the season at home against Portsmouth.
Doncaster Rovers (League One)
Doncaster Rovers fans can expect several more South Yorkshire derbies next season with Wednesday and Rotherham both dropping down.
Both will be August away trips, with Richie Wellens' men heading to Sheffield Wednesday on August 14 and Rotherham United on August 28.
Rovers start the season at home hosting AFC Wimbledon on August 7.
Sunderland will visit Keepmoat on Boxing Day, while Doncaster head to Morecambe on New Year's Day before finishing the season on April 30 at Oxford United.
Rotherham United (League One)
Rotherham United will start their campaign to bounce back from relegation on home soil, welcoming Plymouth Argyle on August 7.
The Millers also have two August South Yorkshire derbies in the mix, with Sheffield Wednesday due to visit on August 21 and Doncaster Rovers arriving at the New York a week later on August 28.
Rotherham are away to Accrington Stanley on Boxing Day and at home to newly promoted Bolton Wanderers on New Year's Day.
The regular season will conclude on April 30 away at Gillingham.
Chesterfield FC (National League)
Spireites fans will have to wait just a little longer to hear about next season.
The National League will announce its 21/22 fixtures July 7 at 1pm.
