Doncaster Sheffield Airport could take a major step towards re-opening this week.

South Yorkshire Combined Authority's board is set to vote today - to release £138 million worth of public money to fund plans to get It back up & running.

It shut in late 2022 after its owners claimed the site was proving to be too costly.

The cash is Doncaster's share of devolution funds, which looks likely to be used to re-open the airport - if it gets the go ahead in today's vote.

It'd then be given to Doncaster Council - who could then lease the site from the Peel Group - who own it - as a way of finding a new operator.

Mark Chadwick campaigned to keep DSA open back in 2022:

"Doncaster Sheffield Airport should have never closed.

"Different business models have shown that the airport can be successful.

"These steps that are happening now show that we're hopefully getting to the end of it all.

"We see a lot of disgruntled people having to travel around the country when they want to go on holiday.

"I speak to a lot of the ex-staff from DSA, and they're travelling to East Midlands, Birmingham, Leeds/Bradford, and Humberside for work."

Emma Andrews is a Sheffield based travel consultant:

"Clients still ask for DSA, even though it's been closed for so long.

"A lot of people like that smaller airport feel.

"It's easier for a lot of people to get to that airport, so there's that flexibility and accessibility which you can't get if you're travelling all the way to Manchester, or even Leeds."

At this point, there's no re-opening date set for the airport.
