Climate protestors to take to streets of Sheffield amid COP26 talks
Extinction Rebellion demonstrators say big companies need to do more to help the environment
Climate change protestors will be taking to the streets of Sheffield later today to call for large companies and governments to do more to tackle carbon emissions.
It comes amid the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, where world leaders are attempting to make progress on major environmental agreements.
Members of Sheffield Extinction Rebellion will be walking in several groups through the city centre today, calling attention to attempts by multinational corporations to 'green wash' their impact on the environment.
'Greenwashing' is used to described companies providing misleading information their products in an attempt to make them seem more sustainable.
Adela, an activist for the group in South Yorkshire, said:
"I'm supporting this action to highlight (greenwashing) because we need to address the issue at its core.
"What matters most is not whether Sheffielders reduce their use of plastic as much as changing the way big companies are destroying our children's futures by dangerous, and unnecessary extraction of fossil fuels."
Sheffield XR say there has been a lack of clear commitments from oil companies in particular to reduce extraction of fossil fuels and invest in renewables.
Protestors will gather at the town hall at midday. Further demonstrations are planned in South Yorkshire throughout the week.
