Yorkshire Coast residents urged to become 'Cancer Champions'
The scheme provides free awareness courses about symptoms, key facts and screenings.
We're being urged to consider becoming 'Cancer Champions' - to help raise awareness of the disease along the Yorkshire Coast.
The scheme - run by the Humber, Coast and Vale Cancer Alliance - teaches people about the key facts, statistics, symptoms and screenings.
Doctor Dan Cottingham is the GP lead for Cancer Research UK there: "We've been promoting the training of champions for some time now, even before Covid.
"Initially it was a two hour session face to face, and with Covid we've done it virtually over a 90 minute timescale.
"It's completely confidential: if a woman concerned would prefer to see another woman then that can be arranged. Anything that we talk about will not go anywhere else, but hopefully we can either reassure you or refer you onto an expert who can go into more detail.
"I think at the moment, particularly with what's happened with Covid in lockdown, some people are concerned about coming to see their GP because of the potential of infection and exposure.
"We have been open throughout the pandemic and we take things by telephone first; we then convert to a face to face appraisal if we see that as appropriate".
The scheme has trained over 2,000 people since launching in September 2018.
