We’re being encouraged to ditch the car and get walking or cycle to work today.

It’s as the world comes together to help reduce carbon emissions and get more active for ‘World Car Free day.’

Angela Williams is the public health lead for physical activity in East Yorkshire, she said:

“I think we've got in the habit of wanting to be somewhere very quickly, and we're all running around at 100 miles an hour. But actually, there's so many benefits to leaving the car at home and walking to the shop or walking to work, or getting the bike out if it's a little bit further. Not only is it great for physical activity, but it's so good for your mental health and getting some fresh air.”

“We have seen a lot more people cycling and buying bikes. I know there was a big bike shortage at one stage earlier this year where so many more people felt more confident and safer to cycle. So not only is it about wanting to get out there and to have an alternative travel, it's also great for people for children who might want to walk, walk or cycle to school.”

“We notice that the environment felt so much cleaner by ditching the car and just walking those journeys or cycling So it’s really going to have a massive benefit for all of us.”
