A yellow weather warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office for the Yorkshire Coast as storm Barra arrives in the UK.

Forecasters say that strong winds are expected to affect much of the UK on Tuesday, with potential travel disruption in places.

Wind gust speeds of 54mph later in the day could be possible.

On the Met Office website they say the winds could bring:

-Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely

-Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer

-Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely

-Some short term loss of power and other services is possible

-It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves

North Yorkshire County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, said:

“As always, our highways teams are ready to respond to any conditions that arise, supported by our 100 farming contractors, should their help be needed in clearing snow on higher ground. We also have emergency response crews ready to react to incidents on the roads network.

“While the impact of Storm Barra is not forecast to be as severe as Storm Arwen at the end of November, we would advise anyone planning to travel to consider whether they need to. If they do, they should be alert to the conditions and leave extra time for their journey.”
