The transformation of Scarborough's South Cliff Gardens is going to be fantastic.
That is according to David Auton, who is Chair of the South Cliff Community Group.
It is after Scarborough Borough Council approved the appointment of a contractor earlier this week.
It means work could start next month of the £7 million project to restore the 200-year-old gardens to its former glory, and a boarded up tunnel built in 1874 beneath the railway tracks of the cliff list will be re-opened to the public.
David said:
"The work will restore a lot of the old buildings that are in there, the victorian shelters and there are 14 shelters.
"The idea will be that we'll be restoring the gardens back to how they were originally designed by the Victorians, but making it look exciting for the future for younger gernerations to come along and learn about the gardens, and just have a good time really with family and friends.
"It'll be the first time that visitors will be able to walk from the northern end of the gardens and walk underneath that railway and go into the south part of the gardens. Until now, you've had to either almost walk down to the beach or walk up to the Esplanade, cross and then go back down again."
The South Cliff Gardens project is being funded by a £4.6m award from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund, £1.6 million from the Borough Council and the remaining balance coming from Section 106 funding, match-funding and the South Cliff Gardens Group.
