There is going to be improved walking and cycling infrastructure in Whitby after North Yorkshire County Council's bid was accepted.
There is going to be improved walking and cycling infrastructure in Whitby.
A share of more than a million pounds will be spent on the scheme after a bid was accepted.
It was submitted by North Yorkshire County Council and it was for the second phase of the Government's 'Active Travel' fund.
Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, said:
"It's at the Guisborough Road, Whitby Park and Ride site up to Prospect Hill. There'll be segregated walkways and cycle lanes along the existing Park and Ride route. One of the criteria's for the funding was that it's close to bus routes too.
"We're very pleased. We need to find out more information from the Department for Transport, especially regarding to what extent we have to engage with the public and consult with the public before we go ahead with any of these schemes.
"If you walk or cycle, you're not driving a car so it's good for air quality, it's good for personal fitness and it's very good for congestion. In other words, it doesn't add to congestion on our roads.
"Our belief is that everyone would like to cycle more and walk more if they have safe routes and locations in which to do that. So this bid and this successful award does enable North Yorkshire County Council to continue to invest in sustainable travel options."
