Whitby RNLI: 'Only use flares in emergencies not celebrations'

The charity says it's dangerous and should only be used in an emergency

People on the Yorkshire Coast are being told to only use flares in an emergency and not for celebrations.

It is after volunteers with Whitby RNLI were called out on Christmas Day, the first time in living memory, due to a flare being spotted.

The message comes as people will be looking to celebrate and welcome the New Year.

Howard Fields, Coxswain at Whitby RNLI, said: "Distress flares are an unique flare, they're not fireworks, they're very distinguishable from fireworks and they're to be used by mariners when they're in grave and imminent danger requiring immediate assistance. They're not for celebrations or letting off just for the sake of it. They have a sole purpose.

"Volunteers will be leaving families, their own celebrations, parties and activities. We will respond to any call but it's just somewhat poor use of our resources, as we could be tied up in something that doesn't lead to anywhere when somebody else could be needing our help.

"Red flares are to be used by marines or people on the shore if they're in grave or imminent danger to alert the emergency services. If you're a member of the public and you see such a flare then please report it on 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
