A Whitby restaurant and hotel has withdrawn an application to install outside seating following almost 50 objections from members of the public.
A Whitby restaurant and hotel has withdrawn an application to install outside seating just days before councillors were set to debate it following almost 50 objections from members of the public.
The White Horse and Griffin in Church Street wanted to put up to four small tables in a yard to the rear of the premises that would have allowed them to serve an extra 16 customers.
Those outside would have been able to consume drinks bought from the premises from noon until 9pm each day.
The application did not seek to change the existing permitted hours or licensable activities.
47 members of the public objected to the application, which was due to go before Scarborough Council’s licensing sub-committee on Friday.
It has now been confirmed, however, that the application has been withdrawn.
The reasons for the objections included fears that it could leave the potential for the change of use from a restaurant to a public bar.
There were also objections relating to the potential for noise and disruption to neighbours.
Another added that they feared “urination and defecation next to local properties”.
A report that had been prepared for councillors stated that not all of the reasons for objection are valid under licensing law.
North Yorkshire Police had not raised an objection to the proposal.
