Whitby Regatta returns this weekend to celebrate 181st year
This year's event will be scaled down and it couldn't be held in 2020
It is the return of Whitby Regatta this weekend as it celebrates its 181st year.
The scaled down event takes place throughout tomorrow, Sunday and Monday.
Organisers say the pandemic has meant some favourites will be missing this year, like the Red Arrows' appearance, but it's hoped they will return in future years.
Jane Miller, Whitby Regatta President, said:
"There will be fairs and rides up on the West Cliff, there'll also be entertainment for the young people and there'll be something for everybody to see. The rowing races will have started hopefully, if the tide and weather allows, on Saturday.
"The racing will continue throughout all the three days and then the famous fireworks display at 9.45pm on Monday when the community can really celebrate coming together after probably the most difficult 18 months.
"Bringing the community together and celebrating being able to do it in reduced circumstances is really what this weekend is all about. But it's also celebrating and perpetuating 181 years of Whitby Regatta.
"The Red Arrows hasn't been possible this year because although our volunteers and committee have been planning and hoping that we could do this in a reduced and safe way, we couldn't actually commit that we could until Boris Johnson and the Government said that we could actually go on with event planning and that wasn't until six weeks ago.
"Everyone is very welcome. We hope you'll come and and enjoy all the festivities of the community event but at the same time respect our residents, be Covid friendly, be Covid-secure, put your mask on and social distance if you're able to."
