Whitby Golf Club is looking to attract more women to the sport.

It is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year.

Amanda Ing, Finance Director at Whitby Golf Club, said: "England Golf who are sort of our national sporting body are looking to encourage more women and girls to be playing golf. There's about a 15 percent of club members across England are actually women at the moment so they're looking to increase that number quite significantly.

"We have 42 ladies here out of a total of 300, so a relatively small but very sort of friendly section here, and that number has increased by 25 percent over the last couple of years through the work that we've been doing trying to attract more women to play.

"I think people see golf as being quite an elitest sport. I think also when we watch golf on the TV every weekend, we see a lot of sort of smart golf clubs and people with lots of expensive equipment but it's a very social game. You can play on your own if you want to but you get to play with a group of other people.

"Part of the challenge that we have in getting more women to play is these days everybody works and everybody has family commitments. We play two days in the week here on a Tuesday and Thursday but I think in recognition of the fact that more people are wanting to play on weekends, we also have competitions here on a Sunday."

If anyone is interested, you can find out more and contact the club via their Facebook page or website.
