A Whitby care home that was closed last year following an outbreak of Covid-19 among its residents is to be turned back into residential properties.

Glencoe Care Home in Chubb Hill Road was shut by North Yorkshire County Council in November, last year.

The home, run by Harmony Care Enterprise LTD, had previously been rated as “Inadequate” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) which found flaws with its coronavirus controls.

The county council was forced to step in to take the 16 residents elsewhere for their own safety following an outbreak among those in the home and its staff.

Following the closure, a planning application was lodged with Scarborough Council by a Ms M Jalali to return the building back to two semi-detached homes, which it had been until 1970.

The planning application submitted stated:

“The conversion to a nursing home was carried out in circa 1970 and has been in operation until November 2020 when Glencoe nursing home was hit by Covid, with staff and residents testing positive for Covid.

“The CQC did an inspection at that time and cancelled the registration of Glencoe as providers. Harmony Care Enterprise Ltd is not allowed to run the building as a care home, as the registration has been cancelled.

“The property is now empty and can no longer be used for a care home.

“The applicant has to look at alternative uses for the building and is therefore seeking planning permission for change of use to residential dwelling houses.”

The planning permission has now been granted by borough council planning officers after no objections were lodged during a public consultation process.
