Whitby Car Park Granted Permission To Operate For Three More Years

A car park in Whitby has been granted permission to operate for three more years.

Scarborough Council planning officers have agreed to renew the Silver Street car park until 2023.

The site has been operating since 2017 where the former Universal Garage used to stand.

Following the demolition of the business, a plan to build 13 homes in its place did not get off the ground and the land has since been used to allow up to 48 cars to park in the town.

Following a public consultation and no objections applicant John Robinson was given permission to operate for three more years.

The council’s planners report granting approval noted: “Both Whitby Town Council and Whitby Civic Society wish to see improvements to the site as it is within the conservation area.

“Account is taken of the policy guidance in relation to conservation areas and the appearance of the existing car park which currently has a dark grey finish, similar to that of road planings, together with four onsite lamp posts.

“On balance, it is thought that the current appearance of the car park within a town centre location is acceptable and as such is not considered to bring harm to the immediate surroundings where the buildings are of mixed character and design.”
