People in Bridlington are being asked to give their views on plans for a new multi-storey car proposed for the town as tomorrow is the deadline.

The proposals will see East Riding of Yorkshire Council redevelop the existing car park space on Beck Hill and Hilderthorpe Road with a three-level building which will provide modern, secure and well-lit parking facilities in a convenient location to serve the town centre.

The car park will be accessed from Beck Hill with the exit on Hilderthorpe Road and will provide 431 parking spaces, with 25 dedicated accessible spaces, eight motorcycle bays as well as a number of electric vehicle charging points.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the public consultation is being carried out online and anyone who wishes to comment on the proposals should go to the dedicated project website – www.beckhillmscpconsultation.co.uk

Residents who may have questions about the proposals can also call the consultation team directly on 0800 061 2281.

Following the consultation process, a full planning application will be submitted where residents can also comment on the proposals.

Councillor Chris Matthews, portfolio holder for strategic property and infrastructure at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

“The proposed new car park at Beck Hill will support our on-going plans for regeneration and growth of Bridlington town centre by providing modern and well-lit parking in a convenient location.

“The proposals will help increase footfall in the town centre while reducing highways congestion currently caused as cars circle the area looking for spaces.

“Before we submit a planning application, we’re keen to hear what the people of Bridlington think of the proposals and this public online consultation will give everyone to review our plans.”

Martyn Coltman, one of the Rolling Chairs of the Bridlington Regeneration Partnership, said:

"There is a perceived lack of accessible parking in Bridlington town centre and I think this will address that perception once and for all. It will not just help the town centre and the businesses of therein and strengthen the town centre, it'll also help places like the Spa, Leisure Centre, and the general tourism trade.

"It's been a long time in the making but the process has had to be this way around because of the nature of how the Hilderthorpe corridor has been regenerated. There was an earlier proposal which obviously wouldn't fit into the space allowed at the time, and obviously since the new bridge has been completed the council has been able to proceed and put these plans together.

"When we do have the bounce back which we're anticipating this summer, we know that from summer onwards and from next year onwards when the car park should be available, that this will make an enormous difference to the businesses in the town centre. It'll help to consolidate business and it'll help to give new businesses confidence to open in the town centre and that's really what we're trying to achieve.

"Businesses are certainly behind it and we've also had a recent short consultation period and we've had tremendous support through social media. It's been one of the most successful things we've ever done so we're expecting great responses and that it'll go through the normal planning process. I believe that work is due to start, if it goes through planning, later this year."

Anyone wishing to comment on the proposals should do so before tomorrow (Sunday 14th February).
