Today is VE Day, which marks the surrender of Nazi Germany in World War Two, and it will be marked with a socially-distanced event in Bridlington.

A wreath will be laid at the War Memorial at 11am with dignitaries set to attend including the newly-elected Mayor, Liam Dealtry.

Martin Barmby is a Royal Navy veteran in the town and said:

"It's just to ensure that everybody in town knows we haven't forgot the sacrifices of 76 years ago, because obviously last year we were heavily curtailed and I know on our streets and on the streets around us, we did have VE day parties in our front gardens but we couldn't actually intermingle.

"Bridlington's like any other town and city in the UK and in fact across the Commonwealth really, in that just about every single family involved were somehow involved in World War Two and World War One. I mean not only within the forces but on the Homefront.

"As we did for Remembrance Sunday last year, that was part of lockdown and everybody just stood two metres apart so we had the same sort of area covered but everyone had two metres between them, so yes by all means come down but be aware that we have to be socially distanced."

We are not aware of anything happened in the Borough of Scarborough.

It has also been confirmed there will be an Armed Forces Day in Bridlington on Saturday 3rd July.

The national one in Scarborough has been postponed..

Martin added:

"We've just had the OK from East Riding of Yorkshire Council for our road closure. We've got a few stalls, ex military vehicles and the leading riders down on the front and obviously there'll be a parade through town from the War Memorial."
