The friend of missing Pete Brown from Whitby has been paying tribute to him.

He was last seen in Scarborough in May 2019 and an appeal to find him has been launched ever since.

Police say a body, which they believe to be Pete, was found last week in some overgrowth near to train lines in the Seamer Road area.

Officers say formal identification is yet to take place and Pete's family are being supported.

Graeme Lindoe, Pete's friend, said:

"The news on Friday was deeply saddening to us all; not only the admins of the Facebook group, but obviously to the nine and a half thousand members of the group but more importantly the wider Whitby community and people across the United Kingdom.

"The outpouring of emotion and comments that have come since the sad news on Friday have been overwhelming; and I know the family are eternally grateful for the time, care and support that they've had from day one of when Pete went missing.

"Pete like many have said, and many will say going forward, had a heart of gold. He was well-loved in not only the Whitby area but far and wide. He would do anything for anyone and I mean that most sincerely.

"He would be doing what we have all tried to do over the period, he would be doing likewise. There's no bigger tribute I could pay to him. He was just a friendly, kind and loving family man who's sadly going to be missed."
