People in the Borough of Scarborough have been paying their respect for the UK Armed Forces this morning.

Flag raising ceremonies took place in Scarborough, Whitby and Filey involving the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.

It is to mark the start of the Armed Forces Day week of celebrations, which culminates in the Armed Forces Day national event this Saturday in Scarborough.

Lieutenant Colonel Guy Balmer, Deputy Naval Regional Commander for the North, said: "Planning for this has been going on for years. Scarborough initially was due to hold this event in 2019 and for a variety of reasons it's been delayed, delayed and delayed. Now we're here, after the best part of three years of planning in those few days leading up to Saturday's big event of Armed Forces Day national event.

"The support from Scarborough Borough Council with all the planning, their focus on making sure this big event has been superb. From our perspective and the military, working alongside them and supporting them has just been great. Without a doubt, the people that have been here and the people that have been focussed.

"Come down to the seafront. Come down to the North and South Bays. We've got a cracking flying display taking place, we've got ships out in the bay itself, a large military village and hopefully there'll be enough to keep everyone interested and everyone amused on the day. Do please come down.

"Obviously the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines are leading very much in Scarborough but we've got the Royal Air Force leading in Filey, we've got the Army leading in Whitby. The Hawk aircraft that flew across was organised by Filey but taking in all three towns."
